He was married to Patricia de Arzú and Sylvia García Granados. He studied at Rafael Landívar University. His awards include Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize, Gold medal of Galicia and Grand Cross of the Order of San Carlos. His cause of death was myocardial infarction.
