Bonnie Tyler (born Gaynor Hopkins on 8 June 1951 in Skewen, Wales; died 8 July 2026 in Faro, Portugal) was a Welsh singer. With her raspy, instantly recognisable voice and worldwide hits such as “It’s a Heartache”, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero”, she became one of the most successful British singers of her generation – and remained at home on the world’s stages for more than five decades.

A girl from Wales

Gaynor Hopkins was born on 8 June 1951 in Skewen near Neath, in the industrial south of Wales. Her father Glyndŵr worked as a coal miner, and her mother Elsie raised the family’s six children. As a child Gaynor sang in her local chapel; at sixteen she left school without qualifications and first worked in a grocery shop. She found her way to the stage through the clubs of her home region, singing with the band Bobby Wayne & the Dixies, forming her own group “Imagination”, and performing at first under the stage name Sherene Davis – to avoid confusion with the singer Mary Hopkin.

The name Bonnie Tyler – and a voice that became a trademark

In 1975 the talent scout Roger Bell discovered the young singer at the Townsman Club in Swansea. The record company RCA signed her and suggested a new name: she put together “Bonnie Tyler” from a newspaper. Success came quickly – in 1976 “Lost in France” reached number nine in the British charts.

In 1977 Tyler underwent surgery to remove nodules from her vocal cords, and her doctors ordered weeks of complete vocal rest. When she screamed out loud in frustration one day, a permanently rough, gravelly timbre remained – the unmistakable husky voice that would become her trademark. Later that year, in November 1977, “It’s a Heartache” was released. The ballad became a worldwide success, reaching number four in the United Kingdom and number three in the United States and selling around six million copies.

“Total Eclipse of the Heart”

In 1982 Bonnie Tyler moved to CBS/Columbia and met the producer and songwriter Jim Steinman, who wrote her a dramatic, operatic rock anthem. On 11 February 1983 “Total Eclipse of the Heart” was released – a love anthem of more than seven minutes that stormed to the top of the charts around the world, including number one in the United States and the United Kingdom, and became one of the best-selling singles of all time. Its parent album, “Faster Than the Speed of Night”, entered the British album chart straight at number one. In 1984 “Holding Out for a Hero”, from the film “Footloose”, added another Steinman classic and cemented Tyler’s reputation as the voice of grand emotion. She was nominated for the Grammy Awards several times.

The European years

As her presence in the British charts faded, Bonnie Tyler grew into an enduring star on the European continent. In 1991 the album “Bitterblue” became a triumph, above all in Norway and Austria – in Norway its title track spent eleven weeks at number one. She toured tirelessly through Germany, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Russia. In 2003 she achieved a late comeback in the French-speaking world: the bilingual re-recording “Si demain... (Turn Around)”, a duet with Kareen Antonn, spent weeks at number one in France and Belgium.

Eurovision and later honours

In 2013 Bonnie Tyler returned to the very biggest stage. Armed with the Nashville-recorded album “Rocks and Honey”, she represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest. On 18 May 2013, in Malmö, Sweden, she sang her entry “Believe in Me”. In the contest itself she finished well down the field, but her performance was warmly received by audiences and critics alike. She received many honours for her life’s work – in 2022 the United Kingdom appointed her a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). In 2023 her autobiography “Straight from the Heart” was published.

On stage to the last

Well into her later years Bonnie Tyler remained a passionate live performer. In 2019 she released the album “Between the Earth and the Stars”, featuring duets with Rod Stewart and Cliff Richard among others, and once again set out on an extensive tour. Even after more than four decades in the business she still had surprises in store: in July 2025 “Together”, produced by David Guetta and drawing on motifs from “Total Eclipse of the Heart”, climbed into the top five of the French airplay charts – a new chapter for a voice that bridged generations.

Illness and farewell

From the late 1980s Bonnie Tyler had made her home on the Portuguese Algarve, where she lived with her husband Robert Sullivan, whom she had married in 1973. In early May 2026 she was admitted to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she underwent emergency abdominal surgery and was placed in an induced coma. She died there on 8 July 2026 at the age of 75. Britain’s Prime Minister said he was “saddened” by her death and called her “one of Britain’s greatest recording artists”; her long-time friend Cliff Richard bade farewell to “a wonderful friend gone too soon”.

Her smoky, unmistakable voice and anthems such as “Total Eclipse of the Heart”, “It’s a Heartache” and “Holding Out for a Hero” keep playing on dance floors, in films and on the radio – far beyond her final curtain.
