Claudia Cardinale (born 15 April 1938 in La Goulette, near Tunis, Tunisia; died 23 September 2025 in Nemours, France) was an Italian actress. With roles in films by Luchino Visconti, Federico Fellini and Sergio Leone, she became one of the defining faces of European cinema in the 1960s, and until her death was regarded as one of the last great stars of classic Italian film.

Between three cultures

Cardinale grew up the daughter of Sicilian immigrants in Tunisia, in a family with two brothers and a younger sister. French was her home language, she attended a French-language secondary school in Tunis, and she later described herself as "Tunisian at heart, Italian by origin, and French by upbringing." In 1955 she appeared on camera for the first time as an extra; in 1957 she played a small role opposite Omar Sharif in Goha and that same year won the "Most Beautiful Italian Girl in Tunisia" competition, whose main prize was a trip to the Venice Film Festival.

Venice and the road into film

On the Lido in Venice, where she appeared in a bikini, Cardinale was mistaken by film people for an actress and received her first offers. She initially declined, but in 1958 signed an exclusive contract with producer Franco Cristaldi, who systematically built her into a star. That same year, on 19 October 1958, her son Patrick was born; about the circumstances of his conception, which she later described in her memoirs as traumatic, she remained publicly silent for years – during that time Patrick was presented as her younger brother. Cristaldi later adopted him; in 1966 Cardinale and Cristaldi married in the United States.

Breakthrough and the great directors

Cardinale's breakthrough came with Bel Antonio (1960). Some of the defining roles of European cinema followed: Luchino Visconti's Rocco and His Brothers (1960) and The Leopard (1963), Federico Fellini's 8½ (1963), and Sergio Leone's Spaghetti Western Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), in which she played one of the genre's few strong female leads. Cardinale thereby became one of the few Italian actresses to remain equally connected to auteur cinema and to internationally successful mainstream film.

Later years

From the 1970s onward, Cardinale could no longer match the commercial success of her early career, but remained a sought-after character actress, appearing among other roles in Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo (1982) and the television production Jesus of Nazareth (1977). In 1975, the year of her divorce from Cristaldi, she began her long relationship with director Pasquale Squitieri, whom she had met on a film set; the relationship produced her daughter Claudia, born in 1979. Squitieri died in 2017. In March 2000 Cardinale was named UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for the Defence of Women's Rights.

Claudia Cardinale died on 23 September 2025, aged 87, at her estate Le Picardeau in Nemours, where she had most recently lived together with her children. Her funeral was held on 30 September in Paris. She leaves behind a body of work that connects three of the most defining directorial voices of her era, Visconti, Fellini and Leone – and a filmography that shows how a young woman from Tunis could become one of the faces of European cinema.
