Dmitri Vladimirovich Vrubel (born 14 July 1960 in Moscow; died 13 August 2022 in Berlin) was a Russian-German painter, concept artist and graffiti artist. His name is closely linked with the East Side Gallery in Berlin. There, in 1990, he painted the mural My God, Help Me to Survive This Deadly Love, showing Leonid Brezhnev and Erich Honecker in the socialist fraternal kiss.

Moscow years

Vrubel was born in Moscow and studied at the Lenin Institute's faculty of art and graphic design. In the 1980s he moved within Moscow's underground art scene and organised exhibitions in his apartment. That scene worked outside official art channels and searched for images for a society in which political language, daily life and ideology were closely intertwined. Vrubel later often used found photographs and placed them in new political contexts.

Berlin and the East Side Gallery

Vrubel came to Berlin in 1990. The Wall had opened, and the East Side Gallery was being created on a remaining section along the Spree. Vrubel painted on the eastern side of the Wall. It was a different place from the western graffiti surfaces: a former border structure suddenly turned into a public projection surface. In that moment he created his best-known work, an image between historical document, satire and personal intensification.

The fraternal kiss

The mural is based on a 1979 photograph showing Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev and East German leader Erich Honecker exchanging a fraternal kiss. Vrubel transferred this political gesture to the Wall at large scale and gave it the title My God, Help Me to Survive This Deadly Love. A state ritual became an image about closeness, dependence, power and the contradictory history of Germany's division.

Restoration and later work

The mural was damaged by weather, overpainting and later repair work. In 2009 Vrubel recreated it as part of the East Side Gallery restoration. Beyond this work, he continued to use images from media, history and religion. Radio Svoboda described his Gospel project, in which he combined news photographs with biblical quotations, and later projects using virtual reality. His work remained tied to contemporary visual worlds.

Farewell

Dmitri Vrubel died in Berlin on 13 August 2022. He was 62 years old. His Wall mural remains a fixed part of the East Side Gallery. It connects political ritual, personal interpretation and public memory in a clear, sharply focused scene.
