Memorial Page for Hans-Jürgen Kreische

Hans-Jürgen "Hansi" Kreische (born 19 July 1947; died 1 April 2026) was a German footballer and coach. As a forward for Dynamo Dresden and an East Germany international, he shaped football in the 1970s through his goals, reading of the game and close connection with his club.

Dynamo Dresden from youth level

Kreische was the son of Dresden footballer Hans Kreische and joined Dynamo Dresden as a child. He came through the youth teams and moved into the first team at an early age. On 29 November 1964 he played his first DDR-Oberliga match; according to the club, he scored in that game. That early appearance led to a career almost entirely tied to Dynamo Dresden.

Goalscorer, captain and championship player

Kreische played for Dynamo Dresden in the DDR-Oberliga and in European competition. The DFB Datencenter lists him with 234 Oberliga matches and 127 goals. The club gives his full competitive record as 344 appearances, 188 goals and 74 assists. In 1971 Dynamo won the double of league title and FDGB Cup; further league titles followed in 1973, 1976, 1977 and 1978. Kreische was DDR-Oberliga top scorer in 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1976, and was voted Footballer of the Year in 1973.

East Germany, the Olympics and the World Cup

Kreische made his East Germany debut on 2 February 1968 in Santiago de Chile against Czechoslovakia and scored in the same match. The DFB describes him as a 50-cap East Germany international with 25 goals. In 1972 he was part of the Olympic squad that shared bronze in Munich after a 2-2 draw with the Soviet Union; Kreische scored in that match. Two years later he was in East Germany's 1974 World Cup team and played in the 1-0 win over West Germany in Hamburg.

A footballer in East Germany's political environment

Kreische's career unfolded at a time when elite sport in East Germany was closely monitored. After the 1974 World Cup match, a private bet with West German politician Hans Apel during a journey became politically sensitive. The BBC later described how Kreische found indications in his Stasi file that this episode affected his omission from the 1976 Olympic Games. The episode shows how strongly sporting decisions could be touched by political boundaries.

After his playing career

Kreische ended his playing career in autumn 1977. He remained connected with football as a coach, scout and supporter of youth development. In the 1995/96 season he took charge of Dynamo Dresden after the club's licence withdrawal and forced relegation. He later worked in scouting and returned to Dynamo Dresden's youth setup in 2014.

Death and memory

Hans-Jürgen Kreische died during the night from 31 March to 1 April 2026 at the age of 78. Dynamo Dresden honoured him as an honorary captain and long-time companion of the club. At Dynamo, his name remains connected with Dresden's successful years in the 1970s, 127 Oberliga goals, the East Germany national team and his later work in youth development.
