Viktor Emanuel of Savoy, in Italian Vittorio Emanuele di Savoia, (born 12 February 1937 in Naples; died 3 February 2024 in Geneva) was the son of Italy's last king, Umberto II, and Queen Marie-José. As a child he was crown prince of the Kingdom of Italy for a few weeks; he spent most of his life in Swiss exile.

Born into the final years of the monarchy

Vittorio Emanuele was born in Naples at a time when the Italian monarchy was already heavily burdened. His grandfather Victor Emmanuel III had long supported Benito Mussolini's fascist regime; that political past deeply damaged the standing of the House of Savoy. In May 1946 his father Umberto II became king, but after the referendum on the form of government Italy chose the republic. For the young Vittorio Emanuele, that meant the loss of his homeland and the beginning of a long exile.

Exile and claim

The new Italian constitution barred former kings of the House of Savoy, their wives and male descendants from entering Italy. Vittorio Emanuele therefore lived mainly in Switzerland. Monarchist circles continued to regard him as heir of the House of Savoy, while republican Italy had politically taken a different path. His public life remained shaped by this tension: personal claim, dynastic memory and a country that had left monarchy behind.

Family

He had a long relationship with Marina Doria, which initially met resistance within his family. After a civil wedding in Las Vegas, the couple married in a religious ceremony in Tehran on 7 October 1971. Their son Emanuele Filiberto was born from the marriage. After Vittorio Emanuele's death, the dynastic succession within the House of Savoy continued to be discussed, because different lines and supporters upheld different claims.

Return to Italy

Only in the early 2000s was the ban on the male descendants of the Savoys entering Italy lifted. Vittorio Emanuele and his son were able to return after recognizing the republican order. The return was symbolic for monarchists, but ambivalent for many other Italians. The House of Savoy remained connected with Italian unification, but also with fascism, war and the decision of 1946.

Controversies and legal cases

Vittorio Emanuele's public image was heavily marked by legal controversies. The best-known case concerned the death of German student Dirk Hamer after shots were fired off Corsica in 1978. A French court acquitted Vittorio Emanuele of manslaughter; he was convicted of illegal possession of a firearm. In 2006 he was arrested in Italy during further investigations, but was later acquitted. These proceedings shaped perceptions of him as much as his dynastic role.

Farewell

Vittorio Emanuele di Savoia died in Geneva on 3 February 2024, a few days before his 87th birthday. His life stands for the afterlife of a fallen monarchy: birth into a royal family, childhood during political rupture, exile, later return and a life full of political and personal fractures. His name is connected not only with Italy's last royal house, but also with a disputed role in Italian postwar history.
