Rainer Manfred Felix Assmann (born 3 July 1935 in Berlin-Dahlem; died 3 May 2026 in Schleswig) was a German judge, military-law jurist, historian of student fraternities and regional historian of South Westphalia. His professional path led into the legal service of the Bundeswehr and to the Truppendienstgericht in Kassel. Alongside that legal career, he worked for decades on the history of Lüdenscheid, the Süderland, Westphalian families and towns, and German Corps student life.

Berlin, Oeckinghausen and Lüdenscheid

Assmann was born in Berlin-Dahlem in 1935. In 1943 his family was evacuated from Berlin to Oeckinghausen near Lüdenscheid. That move became more than a note of origin; it opened a lasting field of research. Assmann attended the Zeppelin-Gymnasium in Lüdenscheid. While still at school he wrote contributions on the history of the Lüdenscheid area. The town, its old families, its medieval legal spaces and its industrial history remained central subjects of his work.

Legal career

After graduating from school, Assmann began studying law and business administration at the University of Tübingen in 1956, later moving to Göttingen. In 1965 he passed the assessor examination in Düsseldorf. After a period with an economic association in Münster, he entered the legal service of the Bundeswehr in 1967. There legal precision, administrative experience and an interest in military law came together. In 1990 he became presiding judge at the Truppendienstgericht in Kassel; in the mid-1990s he served on the presiding council at the Federal Administrative Court.

Student history and archival work

Since his student years Assmann had been connected with Corps Rhenania Tübingen. From 1965 to 2007 he served as archivist of his Corps. In 1978 he founded the series Archiv Corps Rhenania zu Tübingen. In 1984 he became editor, and in 1990 also publisher, of the Beiträge zur Deutschen Studentengeschichte. This work was specialised, but far from incidental: Assmann collected, ordered, annotated and made available sources that would otherwise have been harder to find.

Regional history of South Westphalia

For Lüdenscheid and South Westphalia, Assmann was above all a careful reader of charters, family traditions, town records, legal terms and old routes. The German Digital Library lists him as a jurist, judge and historian and names his Forschungen zur Geschichte von Stadt und Land Lüdenscheid im Märkischen Kreis. The Geschichts- und Heimatverein Lüdenscheid records many of Assmann's articles in Der Reidemeister, including studies on the castle of Lüdenscheid, Oeckinghausen, grave monuments of Lüdenscheid families, old routes and recurring errors in regional historical literature.

Method and effect

Assmann's texts were often detailed, source-based and corrective. That was precisely their strength. He did not only write broad narratives; he clarified names, places, legal relationships, dates and family connections. For local and regional history, such work is fundamental: it creates reliable building blocks on which later accounts can rest. As a family chronicler of the Assmann family and as a scholar of Lüdenscheid's industrial and church history, he connected private memory with public historical knowledge.

Farewell

Rainer Assmann died in Schleswig on 3 May 2026. He was 90 years old. He leaves behind a legal career in a specialised field of German jurisdiction and a substantial historical body of work, especially important where history is reconstructed locally, archivally and patiently: in Lüdenscheid, in the Märkischer Kreis, in South Westphalia and in the archives of German Corps student life.
