On September 1, 2026 we remember Graham Greene. It is his 1st memorial day. 🤍 He never wanted to be in films. His first film role came at 31. 8 years later his name was on the Oscar list. 📍 Graham Greene was born on June 22, 1952 in Ohsweken, on the Six Nations of the Grand River reserve in Ontario. He was Oneida, son of Lilian and John Greene. 🎚️ As a young man he explicitly did not want to be an actor. He worked as a draughtsman, a steelworker and a sound engineer for rock bands. He came to the theatre in the 1970s, first in Toronto, then England. 🎬 In 1983 came the first film role, in 1985 a small one beside Al Pacino in Revolution. And in 1990 Graham Greene played Kicking Bird in Dances With Wolves, alongside Kevin Costner. In 1991 his name was on the Oscar list, for best supporting actor. 📺 After that he walked through half of cinema: Maverick, Die Hard with a Vengeance, The Green Mile. Plus guest roles in Northern Exposure and Murder, She Wrote. In the end more than 180 film and television productions. He never gave up the stage. 🏆 In 2000 came a Grammy for the children's album Listen to the Storyteller. In 2004 came the Earle Grey Award for his life's work, in 2015 Graham Greene was made a Member of the Order of Canada. In 2025 the Governor General's Performing Arts Award, Canada's highest honour in the performing arts. 🤍 He played Indigenous roles often. He did not see himself as a representative or spokesperson of the Indigenous community. On September 1, 2025 in Stratford, Ontario, a life came to a close that had lasted 73 years.
